About the Citizenship Test

What is the Australian Citizenship Test?
The Australian Citizenship Test is a mandatory test for most people applying for Australian citizenship by conferral. It assesses your understanding of Australia, its values, history, and system of government. The test is based on the official resource called "Our Common Bond", which is provided by the Department of Home Affairs.
How many questions are on the test?
The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. You are given 45 minutes to complete it. To pass, you need to score at least 75% overall (15 out of 20 correct) AND answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly.
What are values questions?
Values questions test your understanding of Australian values such as freedom, respect, equality, and the rule of law. There are 5 values questions on each test, and you must get ALL of them correct to pass — even if your overall score is above 75%. These are the most important questions on the test.
What happens if I fail the test?
If you fail, you can sit the test again. There is no limit on the number of attempts, though you may need to wait before rebooking. You'll receive feedback on whether you failed due to values questions or overall score. This is why thorough preparation is important — our practice tests help you identify weak areas before the real test.
Who needs to take the citizenship test?
Most applicants for Australian citizenship by conferral aged 18-59 need to take the test. Some exemptions may apply for people aged 60 and over, or those with significant physical or mental incapacity. Check the Department of Home Affairs website for the most current eligibility information.
Where do I take the real citizenship test?
The real test is conducted at approved testing locations operated by the Department of Home Affairs. You'll receive an appointment letter with the date, time, and venue. The test is taken on a computer at the testing centre.
Can I use notes or a phone during the real test?
No. You cannot use any books, notes, phones, electronic devices, or other reference materials during the citizenship test. The test is conducted in English only and must be completed without any aids.

Test Preparation Tips

How should I prepare for the citizenship test?
Start by reading our study guide, which covers all four test areas. Then take practice tests to identify your weak spots. Focus extra attention on values questions since they all must be correct. Most people need 1-2 weeks of regular practice to feel confident.
What score should I aim for in practice?
We recommend aiming for 85-90% consistently in practice tests before sitting the real test. This gives you a comfortable margin above the 75% pass mark. Most importantly, make sure you're getting all values questions correct every time.
What are the most important topics to study?
Australian values are the highest priority since all values questions must be answered correctly. After that, focus on: the three levels of government, key historical dates (Federation 1901, ANZAC Day, etc.), national symbols, and democratic rights and freedoms.
